ducks have always fascinated me!!!
for some strange reason
I have always felt (and still do) that their existence here on earth
is quite comical and entertaining.
from Daffy and a tiny-bit of Donald…while ignoring Howard,
I have always felt a spiritual kinship there.

all the while…
getting through college was taking it’s toll on me…
having graduated from San Diego State University in 1978
with a degree in theatre arts…set design was my major
(I used to say I was a DRAMA major but that just reinforces…oh nevermind!)

I was very very very clear that I was NOT going to pursue
theatre as a profession.
I left SDSU feeling very insecure about  myself  as an artist,
especially in that field,
but I knew I was going to pursue an artistic career.
I had no idea how….but I was determined.

I rather serendipitously found myself pursuing a free-lance graphic business.
doing a number of logo designs, brochures, signage and the like
I found that my illustration style had a very strong cartoon-look.

no matter how much I tried to steer away from it …
It always came back to a very Disney-esque/Warner Bros feel.
it was probably influenced by my childhood obsession with coloring books.

not that I was negating my accomplishments…
but something inside was itching to be expressed.
and I have come to learn….when I itch…I must scratch!

playing around with some character ideas in the late seventies,
combined with my obsession with STAR WARS,
(and my intense crush on Luke Skywalker)
the idea of doing a barn-yard parody of the film came to mind.
(I wish I had kept a copy of that original art…damn!)

just envision that famous STAR WARS poster
with Luke holding his light saber skyward with Princess Lei at his side
and the image of Darth Vader in the cosmos…..you know the one!

now picture a feathered interpretation of that with
Luke Skyquacker as a duck,
Princess Laya
as a chicken
and
Honk Solo
as a goose
DUCK WARS
with all this sketching and playing around
(it never was published….couldn’t afford the lawsuit)
the duck character stayed with me.

a short short short time later, in an art studio not far away…..
my duck was born….er…hatched!
