along with all the excitement and flurry of
designing and marketing the greeting card line…..
It was the mid-eighties and
AIDS had reared its ugly head!!!
it was very terrifying and painful to see many friends
become sick and quickly die.

I needed my art more than ever then….
it provided for some sense of sanity with insanity raging around me!
nonetheless…I could not ignore …not at all

with my cartoons were getting some recognition,
I was contacted by the coordinator of one of the
first AIDS WALKS in San Diego,
GARY REES
to lend my duck-talents to the cause.

Gary Rees, an early pioneer in LGBT equality,
a businessman and an active member of the vibrant community of
GOLDEN HILL.
stepped up to the plate as coordinator of
AIDS WALK SAN DIEGO

in those early and very devastating years...
Gary asked me to let bucky be the
spokes-duck
for the (soon-to-be) ANNUAL EVENT
as was used in many and much of the promotional materials

what you see here are two fliers where
bucky was encouraging all to participate in the walk.
(yes…two different graphic interpretations
as the evolution of "bucky" was taking hold)

I was very proud to let bucky step into the fore-front here,
which was a fore-shadowing of his HIV-activism to come.
